Noelle felt like she was in a little glass bubble. And in a way, she was. Kinda. That's what being in the ticket booth at the movie theater felt like, anyway. She also felt like she was one of those sideshow freaks at the circus with the way that people would walk by and then glance at her or even bother to talk to her if they wanted a ticket to the movie (which they did in most cases, unless they were soliciting). This was exactly why Noelle hated her job. According to her boss, this was a promotion from scraping gum off of the movie theater's floor. Right. Personally, Noelle just thought that this was another way for her to be tortured slowly. She wasn't a people person, to say the least. She'd much rather be (not so) happily scraping gum off of the floor, and interrupting the occasional kinky couple who had decided to get a little raunchy in the dark. Plus being ‘promoted’ to being in the glass box, which was awfully tiny, didn’t really help Noelle and her claustrophobia problems. If anything, she felt like she was going to end up on the floor, hyperventilating because of lack of air. Yes, Noelle realized she was being a drama queen, but if you were in her shoes, you’d probably be the same, especially if you got into Noelle’s head too.
Seeing that most of the people who were showing up for the movies playing at eight were already in the theaters, Noelle plopped down in the chair that she had brought into her little glass torture box. Examining her chewed-to-the-quick finger nails, Noelle wished that she’d spent a little more time on her looks, like most girls she knew. Maybe she wouldn’t get so many ‘what the hell’ looks from guys. Then there was her added shyness… Snapping out of her thought, Noelle wished she didn’t think oh so much. Wishing will get you no where, she thought, shaking her long brown hair out of her eyes. Setting her boots-clad feet onto the counter in which she kept everything, Noelle sank against the back of her chair, hoping that the night would hurry up and end. She’d be here until midnight, at least. That was if she had good luck. She had to clean up the lobby after this last crowd left, and then get everything ready for tomorrow too. But this was what she got for taking the weekend shift, and she should’ve switched shifts earlier, when she had the chance. But, like they say, it was too little, too late for that.
Noelle was half asleep, when she heard a loud crash. And then some kid crying and whining. Groaning, Noelle stood up, knowing she was going to have to clean up some mess. Seeing that she was right, and some kid had spilled popcorn and soda all over the tiled lobby floor, Noelle bit down, hard, on her bottom lip to keep from screaming. How many times had she had to clean up messes today? Noelle didn’t even think she could count that high. Grabbing the mop and the broom that was kept in a small alcove behind the ticket booth, Noelle sighed as she began sweeping up the popcorn and mopping up the soda. Seeing that the girl who ran the concession stand had already skipped out early to do God knows what with her boyfriend, Noelle yet again wished she was anywhere but here. Maybe if she had a life, she would be one of the people going to see the movies. Noelle hadn’t realized that she’d paused in her work, but when she did realize it, she just sighed and wished that time would speed up so she could get the hell out of there already.
